Exhausted and emaciated, Bon Bon and Dinky made their way along the street, their hooves producing very quiet sounds as they sat them carefully down on the shattered pavement. It was now hours that they had seen the bandits last and Bon Bon prayed they had finally given up on hunting them. She was worn out by fighting them, weary from running away so often and overall, depleted of almost all of her energy. And she had no ammo anymore. If they would attack again now, Bon Bon would not have any idea how she should protect herself and her little companion.
Dinky was in even worse condition. She was smaller than Bon Bon and way younger than her. Her little legs couldn't run as fast as hers and she did not have the strength and endurance that the steeled mare had acquired in all those years of hard training. Ridden by worries, Bon Bon did a glance over her shoulder to the young unicorn behind her. She bit her lips as she noticed Dinky's ragged breath and saw her chest heaving up and lowering down fitfully. Not long anymore, and the little filly would collapse. They were on the run for more than a day now, without a break, and this was more than any foal her age could handle. The fact they hadn't eaten since yesterday did not help either. Very soon, Bon Bon would have to carry her companion, which would make them slower and wear herself out even faster.
Clenching her teeth, Bon Bon looked back on the street in front of her again. If only there would be a place for them to hide..... Something were they could rest. The gears in her head rattled and her eyes darted observingly over the landscape, looking out for any building that could give them protection for a while. Yet there was none and the street seemed to lead through the wasteland for miles.
Suddenly, Bon Bon's ears perked up. But it was not because of a sound she heard, rather, because of a sound she didn't hear anymore. Behind her, the hoofsteps of the little filly had stopped. Concerned, she turned around, seeing Dinky looking at her reflection in a puddle, left from the rain last night. Her face showed a strange, thoughtful expression.
"My eyes....." the little unicorn thought to herself as she saw them in the puddle. "They have lost all their sparkles. They look dull now..... It's because of all that happened. Will they ever look normal again?"
"Hey!" Bon Bon called out to her. "Come on, Dinky! We need to go fast, there's no time for a rest. It's getting dark soon."
A heavy sigh escaping her throat, Dinky looked away from the puddle, directly into the eyes of her guardian. Her look was now one full of desperation. Feeling the weight on her heart overwhelming her, Dinky slumped down on the ground. "I don't know if I can continue anymore," she said, her breath still going ragged. "Mom is gone and Sparkler too..... They are probably dead. I'm never going to see them again." She closed her eyes and hung her head, then, tears made their way out from under her eyelids, creating ripples on the surface of the puddle as they dropped into it.
"We don't know this, Sweetie," Bon Bon replied, giving her voice a tender tone. "Just because we have not found them yet does not mean they are dead. I'm sure, somewhere, they wait for us."
Without opening her eyes, Dinky shook her head. "I don't have hope anymore. Maybe I should just sit here and wait until I'm dead too. Then I can finally see them again....."
Bon Bon was about to give her another answer, but as her eyes got distracted by something, she did not. Far down the road they had come from, a cloud of dust got whirled up. And she could hear engine noises. Very faintly, they rang into her ears.
Bon Bon bit down on her lip. "SHIT!" she said.
